Today's chiropractor may be dubbed the "New Hero" in healthcare in the 21st century. Preventive healthcare didn't start with Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) better known as Obama Care, but this legislation put a new focus on preventive medicine. Its premise is simple; see a doctor before you have acute medical problems. It is a well-known fact that if most medical problems can be identified and treated early, at their onset, one can avoid chronic illness that's then expensive to treat.
Chiropractic care is about "preventive care" and helping your body do what it was designed to do, which is to take care of itself naturally. This is not to say that family physicians and medical specialists are not doing their best to help you, but in the daily course of things, their focus is less on prevention than it is on dealing with chronic illness. Due to the number of patients that family physicians must see in a day and the reimbursement incentives that they are paid by HMO's, a family physician simply doesn't have time to focus on one's overall health. Instead, they must focus on one's current chronic condition.
Although I'm not a doctor, I am surrounded by medical professionals. In my family and extended family, there are seven doctors, a nurse, and a pharmacist. When you consider what they face with government regulations, HMO's and insurance companies, and the sheer number of patients they must treat every day, you quickly understand why they don't have time to focus their attention on diet, exercise, and lifestyle, which are all factors that play a role in one's health.
Although surrounded by well-trained medical people in my family, I also go to a local chiropractor in my community, a doctor by the name of Mark Brusveen D.C. As you read this book, you will begin to understand what I have discovered, which is how chiropractic care can help your health. In fact, in this book we have brought together 10 of America's leading chiropractors to share with you their insights into chiropractic care and the effect it can have on your health.
It is important that you understand that I am now 65 years old, and that I had a major heart attack when I was 42, which was initially treated by having a triple bypass. The damage to my heart left me with only 60% of my heart muscle working, yet I'm still active and ride my bicycle 30-60 minutes, seven days a week. I have a personal physician who is an Internist with a PhD. in medicine, a cardiologist whom I credit with saving my life, three children and their spouses who are doctors, nurses, pharmacist, and my "chiropractor." All of these people play a role in my healthcare.
The goal of this book is to help you understand how chiropractic care can affect your health and why a chiropractor should be one of your primary caregivers. Pain is one of the most common reasons that people go to see a chiropractor. The benefits of chiropractic treatment can be remarkable. You will read stories that clearly show the help that chiropractic care can bring to you.
A lack of pain doesn't necessarily mean that a person is healthy. Most of the time heart disease will not exhibit any symptoms until you experience a heart attack. Eighty percent of the initial phases of cancer are painless until the cancer metastasizes to an organ or bone. The fact is, in the same way that you should maintain the engine in your car, you should maintain your central nervous system. It controls everything. It is crucial to maintain one's spine because it encases and protects the central nervous system.
The philosophy of chiropractic care is that the human body is self-healing and self-repairing. Surgery may be required in some cases, but it's astonishing how many people achieve the same or better outcomes through chiropractic care. In General Spine News in May of 2013, it is reported that for patients who first consulted a surgeon for their condition, 42.7 percent wound up having surgery, compared to 1.5 percent who first consulted a chiropractor. Although you might be skeptical about going to a chiropractor, when you consider the facts as illustrated by the figures above, it would behoove anyone with back problems to see a chiropractor first.
To further support the idea that chiropractic care can have a significant impact on your health, one only needs to turn to a seven-year study posted by the Journal of Physiological and Manipulative Therapeutics involving 70,000 people. The report found that when a person's primary health care provider was a chiropractor, they used 85 percent fewer medications and had 62 percent fewer hospital admissions.
This is not to say that chiropractors know everything about the human body. Our bodies are amazing, and we are learning more about them every day. The human brain controls billions of chemical impulses every second. If you attached every capillary, artery, and vein end to end they would stretch 60,000 miles. The human body is so complex that it is impossible for the medical community to understand it completely.
As a consumer of health care, what is most important is to identify a philosophy of how you want to be treated. We know that your diet, your current lifestyle, your occupation, and psychosocial considerations all have a bearing on your health. Do you want to treat your health with medications and surgeries, or by a drug-free, surgery-free, non-invasive discipline, which is provided through chiropractic care.
